What does a Cutting Machine Operator do?

A Cutting Machine Operator is a specialist in high-precision work.
You will manufacture precision parts from metal using turning, milling and grinding machines. This machinery and equipment is computer operated. You will learn to programme the machines so that you will be able to process parts that meet customer requirements. The most important information for producing the parts can be found in the technical documentation. After checking it you will select the appropriate tools for processing the parts such as lathe tools, milling cutters and drill bits. In order to adhere to the precise specifications and quality standards, you will test the parts in the course of the manufacturing process so that if there are any discrepancies you can take corrective action. You will learn to make minor repairs and undertake maintenance work on the machinery.

What does an Industrial Mechanic do?

As an Industrial Mechanic you are responsible for the good working order of the machinery and equipment.
You will be employed in different work stations, and learn to operate, maintain and repair the machinery. If a machine is defective, you will find and remedy the faults. You will procure the necessary replacement parts or make them yourself. In the process you will ensure that the length of time for which a machine is down is as short as possible so that production is not held up.

What does a Materials Tester do?

As a Materials Tester you are responsible for quality control of the products. You take samples before the start of production, during production and after completion of the parts, and prepare them for certain analytical tests. To carry out the analysis you will use suitable testing methods, measuring equipment and tools. You will, for example, examine the characteristics of certain materials with regard to their composition. Destructive and non-destructive testing methods will provide information about material characteristics such as hardness, resistance and malleability. You will document the analysis data and evaluate the results.

Nowadays machines undertake large parts of production processes, which is why Machine and Plant Operators can be employed in many industrial enterprises. As a Machine and Plant Operator, you will set up, commission and operate machinery. You will be able to retool machines and also undertake minor maintenance work, such as replenishing coolants, lubricants and other consumables, and replacing wearing parts such as seals, filters and hoses.
